Spring Valley Ranch is a working cattle and horse ranch that was established in 1971 by Ned and Doris Westphal. It is located in the center of the Black Hills National Forest. More specifically it is 20 miles southwest of Custer, South Dakota or 24 miles northwest of Hot Springs, South Dakota.
SPRING VALLEY RANCH CATTLE
At Spring Valley Ranch, we raise Gelbvieh, Angus, Hereford cross cattle. We have the privilege of having all of our cattle in the Black Hills year around. In the summertime, the majority of our cattle are put out on open range permits. The rest are kept in private pastures. This gives us the opportunity to explore the picturesque and changing trails in the hills year around.

These calves were born this spring. We always have an unusual calf....Oreo (white & black calf in picture on the left) is the most unusual we have had! This cute little hereford calf on the right, found a nice soft crib to lay in for his nap.

We raise good working registered quarter horses here at Spring Valley Rach. Our bloodlines include: Doc Bar, Two Eyed Jack, Leo, Mid American, Sonny Reynolds, Peponita, Poco Bueno, Casa War Bond, Dandy Seeker, Jackstraw (TB), King Jacket and Fakey Dukas. Currently, we have only 1 breeding stallion at the ranch. Doc Pep passed away last summer. However, we ride and breed many of his offspring. Foxy Red Duke is the stallion we currently have for breeding. He and his offspring are great riding horses.

For sorting cattle for summer pasture, we use both horses and ATVs here at the ranch. In the above photo, all the horses shown are home-raised. Horses from left to right: Kari is riding Willow, a daughter of Doc Pep, Tina is on Jet, a son of Jacks Two Classy, and Ned is riding Neon, a daughter of Foxy Red Duke. Tony is helping us out on the green 4-wheeler and Andy is on the red one.
Kids at Spring Valley Ranch
Stetson has accomplished riding a bicycle without training wheels this past week! Yeah! Morgan has lots of fun on his Strider bike, too. Both boys have Mom and Dad running to keep up!

Stetson is also showing an interest in riding Jet!
Tina and Andy help Morgan and Stetson as they learn to cross the monkey bars at a playground. What an adventure!
